Used LEGO vs New LEGO: Is Used Worth Buying?

If you've ever browsed eBay, a garage sale, or a mystery subscription box, you've probably wondered — is used LEGO actually worth it? The short answer is yes, but there's more to it than that. Here's everything you need to know before you buy.

Why LEGO Holds Up Better Than Almost Any Other Toy

LEGO bricks are made from a high-quality ABS plastic that is incredibly durable. A brick made in 1980 will still snap perfectly onto a brick made in 2024. LEGO's manufacturing tolerances are so precise that the company tests them to a fraction of a millimeter. This is exactly why used LEGO can be just as functional as new LEGO — the bricks themselves simply don't wear out under normal use.

This durability is actually one of LEGO's most remarkable qualities and it's why the resale market for used LEGO is so strong. Unlike most toys that degrade, break, or become obsolete, LEGO bricks remain perfectly usable for decades.

The Case for Buying New LEGO

New LEGO has some clear advantages that are hard to argue with.

You know exactly what you're getting. Every piece is accounted for, instructions are included, and the box is sealed. For collectors who want mint condition sets or for gifting purposes, new is the obvious choice.

Exclusive sets and themes. Some LEGO sets are only available new — limited editions, seasonal releases, and licensed sets that haven't hit the secondary market yet. If you want the latest Star Wars set or a brand new Technic model, new is your only option.

No cleaning required. New bricks come straight out of the bag ready to build. There's no sorting, washing, or inspection needed.

The tradeoff? New LEGO is expensive. Retail pricing averages around $0.10–0.12 per piece for standard sets, and some specialty sets cost significantly more. For builders who want volume — lots of pieces to create, experiment, and build freely — new LEGO can get pricey fast.

The Case for Buying Used LEGO

Here's where it gets interesting. Used LEGO, when sourced well, offers exceptional value that new LEGO simply can't match.

Price per piece. Quality used bulk LEGO typically sells for a fraction of retail cost per piece. This means a builder can get significantly more bricks for the same budget, which is a big deal for MOC builders and creative free-builders who need volume.

Rare and retired parts. Some of the best LEGO pieces — unique colors, discontinued prints, vintage elements — are only available used. If you're looking for a specific part that LEGO no longer produces, the secondary market is your only option.

Sustainability. Buying used LEGO keeps perfectly good bricks out of landfill and gives them a second life. For environmentally conscious families, this is a genuinely compelling reason to go used.

Mystery and surprise. There's something genuinely exciting about sorting through a bulk lot of used LEGO and discovering unexpected pieces, unusual colors, or rare accessories you didn't know you were getting. It's a different kind of fun than opening a new set.

The Biggest Concern: Cleanliness

The number one hesitation people have about used LEGO is cleanliness — and it's a fair concern. Used bricks have been handled, played with, and stored in all kinds of conditions. Some bulk lots you find online or at garage sales may be dusty, sticky, or mixed with non-LEGO pieces.

This is why sourcing matters enormously with used LEGO. If you're buying from a reputable seller who inspects, sorts, and cleans their bricks, you're getting a completely different product than a random bin from a garage sale.

At BrickFrens, every single brick goes through a multi-step quality process before it reaches you. We hand-inspect each piece for cracks, discoloration, and damage. Only pieces that pass inspection move on to washing and sanitizing using a kid-safe cleaning process. Every brick is fully dried before packing. The result is clean, quality-controlled used LEGO that's ready to build the moment you open the box.
